NZ Gardener is 70 this month and Kiwi rose legend Bob Matthews has named a new rose after us to mark our birthday!
The first issue of NZ Gardener came out in September 1944 – 70 years ago. We thought this milestone deserved celebrating and asked Bob Matthews to breed this very special rose, ‘NZ Gardener’. It will be available for sale next year but we have 100 to give away to new and renewing subscribers this month. The Floribunda ‘NZ Gardener’ has pretty soft apricot-pink fl owers, with a charming old-fashioned form and grows to 1.2m. It has a sweet, delicate fragrance, and as the fl owers age they turn dusky pink (one of its parents is the exceptional Matthews-bred ‘My Mum’). Bob describes ‘NZ Gardener’ as the “ultimate garden rose”. It’s defi nitely a must-grow for NZ Gardener readers!
